What to Wear on a First Date: Makeup Tips

The lockdown is over, and it’s time to start dating IRL again. A first date may feel exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time. The last thing you want to worry about is what you’re wearing when you’re on that date.

You can’t have a re-do at a first impression, so getting it right the first time is super important.

Buckle up as we will take you on a crash course in what to wear on a first date to make your best first impression.

First Date Prep

One of the best ways to calm your nerves is to be prepared. Choose your outfit, makeup, jewelry, and hairstyle beforehand to avoid second-guessing yourself ten minutes before it’s time to meet up.

Plan the date on a day or night that you don’t have anything else going on so you can focus on preparing yourself for the date. Make time for that mani/pedi, exfoliate your skin, or take an hour to rest from the busy week you just had.

Here are a few other things to keep in mind as you prep for your first date.

Wear Something That Makes You Feel Confident

You don’t want to be pulling or tugging at your outfit all night long. Feeling comfortable in what you’re wearing is crucial to how you feel on the date. Stick to classic styles that look effortless.

You don’t want to look like you tried too hard—aim to look both polished and low-key. Your clothes shouldn’t stand out more than your personality.

According to color psychologists, you should wear the colors red and black on a first date. These colors are shown to make a person look more attractive. Maybe this is because the color red is associated with love, roses, or Valentine’s Day. Black reveals confidence and prestige.

So choose something you feel your best in that’s comfortable and not too flashy. Are you going out for coffee? Try a pair of jeans paired with a vintage tee half-tucked and a pair of sneakers or heels. Shorts with a silk cami and layered necklaces are another trendy, more dressy option.

Are drinks in your future? Wear a black open-backed top or a top with appropriately placed cutouts paired with trousers and a bold shoe. Statement earrings can pull a basic black top together and make it look stunning as well.

If you’re unsure of what to wear, ask a friend. A good friend will always give you an honest answer.

Dress For Your Body Type

Always dress for your body type. Don’t try to squeeze into your bestie's outfit that you love if it doesn’t fit you well.

There are many body shapes, five to be exact. Knowing yours will help choose the right fit of clothing. What may fit one body may not suit another. These five body shapes are:

  • Rectangle
  • Triangle
  • Spoon
  • Hourglass
  • Top Hourglass

Everybody’s shape is beautiful. There is no perfect or ideal body shape, and the most important thing is that you are healthy and happy. Remember that you are gorgeous.

Wear Natural Looking Makeup

Wearing makeup makes you feel confident and leaves you with a fresh appearance. When going on a first date, you may not want to look too made up, though, so stick to natural looks that don’t look too bold and dramatic. Of course, if you want to go for that full beat, no one is stopping you.

Opt for your natural set of magnetic lashes rather than the bold ones you’d wear for a night on the town. Naturally painted nails in nude tones or French manicures are fantastic options for your fingers.

Day date? Try wearing a light pink or clear gloss with a swipe or two of mascara or a pair of natural lashes. Try wearing a nude lip with a smoky eye if you’re meeting up in the evening.

Keep foundation light and sheer, but don’t be afraid to play with blush and bronzer. Make sure your foundation matches your skin tone. If you aren’t sure of the color, get color-matched at the cosmetics store.

All in all, though, wear whatever makeup makes you feel your most comfortable and confident. You came to slay!

Style Your Hair

Your hair will be one of the first things that the other person notices. Make sure it is freshly shampooed and smells fresh.

A half-up, half-down style is never out of place, and neither is a bouncy pony. Down with loose curls can look appropriately romantic, as well. Take your time to get a look you feel confident wearing.

Add Some Ice

Jewelry is the icing on the cake. Necklaces, earrings, and bracelets should match the outfit you choose. Remember not to be too flashy, too trendy, or too shiny. Less is more when you wear jewelry on a first date.

Spritz Your Fave Scent

Wear a light fragrance that is not too overpowering. Something light and fresh will do the trick. If you prefer spicy scents, choose one that matches your vibe.

Ensure that the scent you choose is something you’ve worn before, and you know that it works well with your body chemistry. You don’t want to get stuck wearing a fragrance for the first time on a first date because you’ll be disappointed if you don’t end up loving it.

Give Your Breath a Fresh Minty Fix

Don’t forget to pack some minty gum or a few breath mints in your bag. Reach for one or two after coffee or dinner to avoid being caught off guard.

Be Yourself

No one can rock being you more than you. So be confident in who you are. No amount of makeup or trendy clothes can change who you are on the inside. Know your worth and let it shine through confidently.

If you are shy or nervous, be honest and let the other person know. Your honesty will help the other person to understand upfront how you’re feeling. It is entirely normal to be nervous.

Take a few deep breaths, stay calm, and remember to have fun. Keep in mind that if you like the person, there’s always time for another date, and if you don’t, it’s not the end of the world. There are plenty of fish in the sea. You’ve got this, GF!
