6 Health & Beauty Hacks to Boost Your Wellness

Health has become way more of a priority for a lot of us over the last few years. We’ve realised just how important it is to take care of ourselves, and not just our physical health either. Our mind, body and self-esteem are all super important too.

Take some time out for self-care to enjoy the benefits of feeling and looking your best with these free health, beauty and wellness hacks:

1.   Give Yourself a Facial Massage

If you’re into beauty and on TikTok, you’ll have spotted a whole bunch of videos showing you how to do a facial massage on yourself (gua sha stone or facial massage tool optional). These can have amazing benefits for your skin, water retention and your overall feeling of wellbeing.

It’s great for reducing puffiness and helping with lymphatic drainage, which can make you feel a little bloated. Your lymphatic system is what removes waste and toxins from your body (including your skin), and a sluggish system can be bad for your health and your skin.

Facial massage is also great for smoothing the skin and fighting signs of aging, like dull skin, wrinkles and sagging skin. Plus it feels absolutely amazing to take time out and give yourself a little TLC.

2.   Hop in a Cold Shower

The list of benefits from cold showers is LONG! Cold showers are said to be good for making your hair shinier, reducing stress levels, tightening your pores and boosting your immune system. It’s even thought that they can increase your metabolic rate. There’s a reason that so many people swear by going swimming in cold water!

A cold shower is a great way to wake up in the morning and could help you feel more alert with the get up and go that you need to thrive. Having showers that are too hot can actually dry your skin and hair out or cause broken veins and capillaries in your skin. So turn down the heat, take a deep breath and get ready to enjoy the cold.

3.   Do Some Breathing Exercises

Breathing exercises can be a great way to stay calm and center yourself, especially if you have a busy lifestyle. Like meditation, breathing exercises make sure that you focus on the moment you’re in, rather than worrying about what’s going on in the world around you. Doing breathing exercises regularly can help to improve your focus and concentration, as well as health benefits like improving your blood pressure and cardiovascular muscles.

Take yourself somewhere quiet where you can relax, and follow these breathing exercises to feel the benefits for your body and mind. If you struggle with anxiety or find it hard to relax, this can open up a whole new world of experiences for you.

4.   Spend Some Time in The Great Outdoors

Whether you’re into forest bathing, hiking, going for a run or just hanging out at the beach, spending time outdoors can be just what you need for your wellbeing. Being outdoors is a full sensory experience for your body and mind, helping us to feel connected to the world around us. Just being in a green space and spending as little as 10 minutes outdoors can be great for our mental health.

During the pandemic, many of us have spent more time outdoors as businesses closed and we were encouraged to spend more time in open spaces rather than meeting indoors. An outdoor workout, or even just a change of scenery, can do wonders for the soul. Plus, if it’s sunny you’ll benefit from vitamin D, just make sure you wear your SPF.

5.   Get Some Rest

When life is busy, we sometimes don’t take enough time out to rest and recover. This can leave us feeling burnt out, tired and have a negative impact on our overall wellbeing. Not getting enough sleep can affect your hair, skin and physical appearance too - has anyone ever told you that you ‘look tired?” There’s a reason it’s called beauty sleep..

Take some time to get an early night, sleep in late or head for a little nap in the day if you can.

If you struggle to get to sleep, try and limit screen time before bed, throw on some warm socks and have a hot drink so that you can hit the pillow and get some zzz’s.

6. Stand Up Straight

This is a really easy one but can make a big difference to the way you feel. Having good posture can help you to look your best, feel more confident and can benefit your back and joints. It also opens up your airways and helps you to breathe better, which is great for feeling calmer and improving oxygen levels around your body - perfect for your skin, body and hair.

Proper posture helps your bones, ligaments and muscles to align. This can reduce back pain, tension and headaches and make you feel great. We spend a lot of time staring at screens, especially our phones, which can be bad for the rest of our body.
